Community Foundation and Historical Society Host Nonprofit Leaders

Easton, Maryland - April 12, 2010

The Mid-Shore Community Foundation and the Historical Society of Talbot County hosted nonprofit board leaders from throughout the Mid-Shore community to discuss opportunities for networking and collaboration. The session was held at the Historical Society auditorium in Easton and was facilitated by Teri Bordenave, a consultant with extensive experience in leadership training for nonprofit boards.

The discussion was an outgrowth of a Roundtable hosted by the Mid-Shore Community Foundation last fall to identify the challenges facing nonprofits in the 5 county Mid-Shore community. At that time, participants expressed the need to develop a forum for nonprofit board leadership in the region.

Those in attendance endorsed the creation of a facilitated peer group of nonprofit board chairs that would provide an opportunity for ongoing education, support, new ideas and fresh perspectives. The group felt that participants in the board chair peer group would benefit greatly by coming together periodically (in person and/or electronically). It was felt that such discussions would also benefit the nonprofits as a result.

Topics for the forum would be generated by the members of the group. As needed, relevant experts could be featured to cover specific topics such as parliamentary procedure, audits, good governance practices, fiduciary oversight, and legal responsibilities.

The Mid-Shore Community Foundation agreed to coordinate the forum for board chairs which expects to begin with its first session hosted once again by the Historical Society of Talbot County in late spring or early summer. After that, the group would meet on a rotating basis at other sites throughout the Mid-Shore community.

Stuart Bounds, president of the Mid-Shore Community Foundation, announced that the Foundation was sponsoring a training session on board governance on May 14. That workshop will be conducted by the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations and it is part of a series of workshops sponsored by the Foundation in partnership with Maryland Nonprofits.
