Mid-Shore Foundation Recognizes Dr. Benjamin Kohl For Community Leadership
Easton, Maryland -February 25, 2010
The Mid-Shore Community Foundation inducted Dr. Benjamin G. Kohl into the Town Watch Society in recognition of his extraordinary community leadership in Kent County. The Town Watch Society was created by the Foundation in recognition of Thomas J. Bullitt, the first owner of the Bullitt House who formed the Town Watch in 1813 to protect the local community. The Bullitt House is home of the Mid-Shore Community Foundation.
Dr. Baird Tipson, MSCF Board member and President of Washington College, nominated Dr. Benjamin Kohl for membership in the Town Watch Society. In addition to his exceptional service to Washington College as trustee and generous supporter, Dr. Kohl serves on the Town of Betterton Planning Commission, is a member of the board of the Kent County Historical Society, and drives for Food Link.
At the non-profit Mainstay in Rock Hall, he has established a classical music series, and in Betterton, he led the effort to restore historic floating oyster houses known as arks, and he is currently involved in an effort to turn a former church into the Betterton Community Center. Dr Tipson explained, “I am honored to nominate this dedicated philanthropic leader whose work has had a major impact on our community.”
Benjamin G. Kohl was educated at Bowdoin College, the University of Delaware, and Johns Hopkins University. From 1966 until his retirement in 1998, he taught medieval and early modern history at Vassar, where he served as chair of the Department for seven years. Kohl resides in Betterton, Maryland, where he is currently working on a book on the Governance of Late Medieval Venice. In addition to his work as a scholar, on the Eastern Shore Kohl teaches in the local Elderhostel, and directs The Hedgelawn Foundation, Inc. (a small charitable trust dedicated to the promotion of the humanities, historic preservation, and the visual and performing arts).
The Mid-Shore Community Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity serving Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Talbot Counties.
