Mid-Shore Community Foundation Announces Steele Scholars
Easton, Maryland - June 25, 2009
The Mid-Shore Community Foundation awarded $125,000 to the first Austin and Martha Steele Scholars. Five exceptional public high-school graduates received a four year, $25,000 scholarship at the senior awards programs at Cambridge South-Dorchester High School, Easton High School, Kent County High School, Queen Anne’s County High School, and North Caroline High School.
Austin and Martha Steele were retired educators who resided in both Dorchester and Talbot counties. They were committed to the development of a new generation of leaders committed to community service and education. They wanted to ensure that public high school graduates with an exceptional academic record would have the funds necessary to complete their college degree.
Each year, the Mid-Shore Community Foundation will provide $25,000 scholarships to one public high school graduate from each of the 5 Mid-Shore counties thanks to the generosity of Austin and Martha Steele. For 2009, the scholarships were awarded to Katelin Ann-Marie Cep, Erin Flack, Meghan Anne McArdle, Andrea Leigh Vance, and Alycia Lynn Vansant.
Katelin Cep is a graduate of Easton High School. Inspired by the life story of Helen Keller and by her teachers, she is committed to a career in teaching and plans to pursue a degree in education at Hood College this fall.
As a graduate of Cambridge South-Dorchester High School, Erin Flack has pursued her interest in speech pathology while in high school. Erin plans to attend Loyola College, earn a degree in speech pathology, and hopefully practice her chosen career in a school setting.
Meghan McArdle also plans to pursue a career in education. She is a graduate of Queen Anne’s County High School and was inspired by her teachers to help future generations of students. Meghan will attend Towson University and seek a degree in elementary education.
North Caroline High School graduate Andrea Vance became committed to a career in teaching after interning at Denton Elementary School. Andrea will attend Frostburg State University and plans to pursue a degree in Elementary Education.
