Grantmaking at Mid-Shore Community Foundation

Philanthropy is more than money contributed to worthy causes. It is a process that unites monetary support with people who are committed to making a difference. At Mid-Shore Community Foundation (MSCF), we support nonprofit organizations and community institutions that are strengthening our region in many different ways. Thank you for your interest in MSCF, and for your dedicated service to the people of our community. It is a great privilege to do this work, and it is an honor to be associated with the many grantees – past, present and future – that share our commitment to the mid-shore region.

Deadlines, Process,
and Response Time

As a community foundation, we involve community members in our grantmaking decisions by inviting them to serve on our Grants Committee, which meets at least quarterly.

Applications due:

April 1

October 1

Grants awarded:

June 30

December 30

Most grants issued by the Mid-Shore Community Foundation are made possible through donor-advised and field of interest funds. The Grants Committee serves as a facilitator by reviewing all grant requests for eligibility and approving the distribution of eligible requests to fund representatives. Fund Representatives are free to recommend grants in response to all or none of the requests submitted.

In addition to distributing grants from donor-advised and field of interest funds, the Foundation is empowered to make grants on behalf of deceased donors. The Foundation Board has a responsibility to balance the donors’ original charitable intentions, insofar as they are known, with the Foundation’s understanding of community needs. Currently, the Foundation Board serves as fund representative for a limited number of funds, primarily scholarship funds.

Grants are awarded during 2 grant cycles each year. Requests are accepted at any time, but should be submitted with the following deadlines in mind:

Spring:

  • Applications due April 1
  • Grants awarded June 30

Fall:

  • Applications due October 1
  • Grants awarded December 30

Non-profit, governmental or other public groups interested in applying for grants are invited to submit an application. A sample application form can be downloaded HERE.  Applicants are not required to use MSCF’s form, but are asked to include all information requested there in their request. All applications must include a complete set of current financial statements, a project budget, a copy of your IRS tax determination letter (if changed or not on file at MSCF), and a list of current Board Members.

The Foundation will only accept one grant request from an organization during a 12-month period.

Grant recipients will be required to submit a comprehensive final report on the project or program no later than one year after the grant is awarded.

We look forward to working with you to serve mid-shore community and invite you to call Robbin F. Hill, Director of Foundation Programs, at 410-820-8175 or e-mail info@mscf.org if you have questions about the process or wish to discuss a grant idea.
