Bonnie Hilghman Cancer Fund Presents Grant to Caroline Health Department
Easton, Maryland - November 10, 2010
The Bonnie Hilghman Cancer Fund of The Mid-Shore Community Foundation presented a $3,000 grant to the Caroline Health Department to help cancer patients on the Mid-Shore in need of financial assistance. The money will be used to help pay for prescriptions, medical treatment, transportation, day care, rent and various other expenses that cancer patients deal with on a day-to-day basis.
Duane L. Hilghman established the Fund in 2005 as a memorial to his wife, Bonnie Hilghman, who courageously fought cancer over a number of years and was an inspiration to other cancer patients. Since its inception, the Fund has distributed over $42,000 in grants, with $33,000 going to the Caroline County Health Department.
Founder Duane L. Hilghman noted, “At this special time of the year, it is an occasion for reflection, thanksgiving, and celebration and doing what we can to help others. To do so gives true meaning to this season and reflects on each of us and our community.”
Significantly, the need for financial assistance has increased with the recent recession and related cuts in state and local government health budgets. Equally important, many cancer patients and their families have been dealing with layoffs and loss of insurance coverage.
