Bonnie Hilghman Cancer Fund Makes Grant

Pictured left to right are Becky Loukides, Deputy Health Officer, Caroline County Health Department; Duane Hilghman, president of Service Transport in Hurlock, founder of the Bonnie Hilghman Cancer Fund, and advisory council member of Mid-Shore Community Foundation; Laura Patrick, Wellness Director, Caroline County Health Department; and David Nagel, board member of Mid-Shore Community Foundation.

The Bonnie Hilghman Cancer fund has recently awarded an additional $2,000 to the Caroline County Health Department bringing the total donated over the past two years to $12,000. These funds are made available to cancer patients in the Mid-Shore region.

These funds are unique in that they can be used to help cover costs incurred by cancer patients not normally covered by traditional plans. For example, the fund provides assistance 1) for medications to combat the side effects of therapy, 2) for transportation, gas, or childcare costs to allow patients to go for treatments, and/or 3) for assistance with household bills a person cannot pay because they are too ill to work, such as housekeeping or nursing care.

Laura Patrick, Wellness Director at the Caroline County Health Department states, “This fund has allowed us to work with patients who don’t have insurance or whose insurance doesn’t cover some of the expenses associated with cancer treatment.”

Duane Hilghman, president of Service Transport in Hurlock, started the Fund to keep the spirit of his wife, Bonnie, alive after her death from breast cancer in 2004 at the age of 51. Hilghman comments that, “This fund shows the community that individuals fighting cancer have individual needs, in addition to medical needs, that need to be addressed. We are especially pleased that the money raised remains in our communities to help local residents with their battles against cancer.”

The First Annual Golf Tournament to benefit both the Bonnie Hilghman Cancer Fund and the Marci Dayton Memorial Fund will be held June 25th at the Caroline Country Club. Both of these funds are committed to helping local cancer patients. Hilghman is excited about the tournament because “100% of the funds raised will go to these two funds. 100% of the proceeds will go straight back to the community to help others!”

Both the Bonnie Hilghman Cancer Fund and the Marci Dayton Memorial Fund are administered by the Mid-Shore Community Foundation, a public foundation designated as a 501(c)(3) charity. Gifts to the funds are fully tax deductible as allowable by the law.
