Mid-Shore Community Foundation Names Three New Members to Board

The Mid-Shore Community Foundation recently named to its Board of Directors James A. Adkins of Cambridge, John W. Dillon of Oxford, and Baird Tipson, Ph.D. of Chestertown.

James A. Adkins served in the U.S. Army for 22 years and was former chief of staff and assistant adjutant general for state operations for the Maryland Military Department and former deputy secretary for the Maryland Department of Veteran’s Affairs.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of the State of New York and a Master of Arts degree from Washington  College.  He has served on the James B. Richardson Foundation and Museum Board of Trustees and the Dorchester County Historical Society Board of Trustees.  He currently is serving on the Board of Governors at the Cambridge Yacht Club and on the Dorchester General Hospital Community Association Board.

John W. Dillon is a retired executive with Verizon Corporation and served as interim president of the University of Maryland Foundation.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Bonaventure University and completed executive level graduate courses at the University of Virginia, Darden School.  He has served on the boards of Shore Health System, Talbot Bank, University of Maryland  Foundation, University of Maryland Center for Environmental Studies, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Talbot County, Habitat for Humanity in Talbot County, Leadership Maryland, MidAtlantic Medical Services, and Historic Oxford Limited.

Baird Tipson is president of Washington  College.  Previously, he served as president of Whittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio; provost and acting president at Gettysburg College, and associate dean for the College of Arts and Sciences at Central Michigan  University.  He has an undergraduate degree in religion and history from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in religious studies from Yale  University.  Tipson currently serves on the executive committee of the NCAA Division III Centennial Conference and is a Governing Council member of the Wye Faculty Seminars.  He also serves on the board of the Hodson Scholarship Foundation.

Mid-Shore Community Foundation (MSCF) is governed by a board of directors representing the five Mid-Shore counties: Caroline, Dorchester,  Kent, Queen Anne’s, and Talbot.  The Board recently approved its slate of officers for fiscal year 2007, re-electing Charles T. Capute, Esq. as chairman, Lloyd L. Beatty, CPA, as treasurer, and W. Moorhead Vermilye as secretary.  Also re-elected as committee chairs were Charles T. Capute, Esq. (executive committee); W. Moorhead Vermilye (nominating); Lloyd L. Beatty (finance); Charles L. Lea, Jr. (investment); Alice R. Bower (grants), and Hamish S. Osborne, Esq. (strategic planning).  County Advisory Committee chairs include Jeffrey Heflebower, Caroline County; Charles W. Kelly, Dorchester County; Alexander P. Rasin, III, Esq., Kent County; Mark M. Freestate, Queen Anne’s County; and W. Thomas Fountain, Esq., Talbot  County.

The MSCF connects private resources with public needs to enhance the quality of life for all citizens of Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Talbot Counties, Maryland.  Recently, MSCF was recognized as the first Maryland Community Foundation to achieve Confirmation of Compliance with the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations.
