Since the sale of their building, the 1883 School House, to the Lily Pad Café and Catering in early January, the members of the Woman’s Club of Denton have been finalizing plans to put their money to use in the best possible way in the service of their community. They have focused not only on immediate grants but also with leaving a legacy for the future.
In late spring they used a portion of the proceeds to make substantial grants to 11 Caroline County non-profit organizations. Together these agencies received $108,000. The list of recipients is quite impressive and includes Hospice, the Council of the Arts, Habitat for Humanity, the Historical Society, the Humane Society, CASA, Benedictine Foundation Open Community Program, Foundation for Mental Health, Denton Child Development Center, Denton Volunteer Fire Department, and the Library -- all in Caroline County.
These grants were made to honor the many workers at all levels professional, staff, volunteers who dedicate their time and their resources to service for others and who enrich their community in so many ways to make it a better place.
In looking to the future, the Woman’s Club of Denton has established a donor advised fund with the Mid-Shore Community Foundation (MSCF) with the remainder of their funds. This arrangement allows the Woman’s Club to recommend distributions from their fund to specific charitable organizations without worrying about administrative tasks or finding expert investment choices. These services are provided by the Mid-Shore Community Foundation.
The intention of the Woman’s Club new fund is to provide long term, annual support in the form of (1) a Chesapeake College scholarship for the benefit of a Caroline County High School graduate, (2) assistance to programs supporting education, literacy, and other cultural activities, (3) assistance to programs supporting youth and families, and (4) assistance to programs promoting health and safety. All benefiting programs will serve the Caroline County community.
“I feel confident that this reflects the wishes of the Club as to our future charitable giving because it reflects the range of activities the Club has supported over the years. This fund honors the many women who worked hard for the Club since its founding eighty-eight years ago, and I am pleased that the charitable wishes of these women may now continue to perpetuity,” reported Patricia Bradley, president of the Woman’s Club of Denton.
The Mid-Shore Community Foundation’s mission is to facilitate and promote philanthropy in the 5 counties of the Mid-Shore by connecting private resources with public needs.
“The establishment of the Woman’s Club of Denton Fund will generate support for their causes and enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Caroline County for years to come and the Mid-Shore Community Foundation is very pleased to help them achieve their goals,” states Barbara Lane, director of donor relations for the Foundation.
Non-profits, individuals, families and businesses can open charitable funds with the Mid-Shore Community Foundation with no set up costs. The MSCF provides professional management and investment for these charitable funds without the expense or effort of a private foundation or an estate trust.
