The Thomas James Bullitt House

Constructed in 1801
102 E. Dover St.,
Easton, Maryland

On December 20, 2002, Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas F. Brady, Mr. and Mrs. A. James Clark, and Mr. and Mrs. William T. Hunter donated the historic Bullitt House to the Mid-Shore Community Foundation so that the historic residence of Thomas James Bullitt would become the focal point for philanthropy and charitable programs in the five-county region served by the Foundation. In gratitude for the generosity of these individuals, the Board of Directors issued a proclamation on March 13, 2003 recognizing the donation as a gift to all the residents of the Mid-Shore region and proclaiming their gratitude for this significant gift which would provide a permanent home for the Mid-Shore Community Foundation and help insure the growth of philanthropy in support of the residents of the five-county region.

Thomas James Bullitt (1790-1840), a lawyer and prominent resident of the Town of Easton, built the house for his growing family in 1801. Among other achievements, Thomas Bullitt started the Town Watch, a local militia made up of the town’s older and highly regarded citizens to help protect the town as the War of 1812 approached. In 2002, the Mid-Shore Community Foundation created the “Town Watch Society,” through which individuals are recognized for supporting their communities through their work with the Mid-Shore Community Foundation. Each year the Board of Directors recognizes one or more individuals for their leadership and service in support of their community by inducting them into the Town Watch Society.
